Three Days in Bangkok

After a relatively smooth flight to Bangkok via HK, we checked into our hotel - Sathorn Place, "the home of warm service" - and set out to see a bit of Bangkok.

Day 1 - Thursday, 27 December 2012
After check in we weren't up for much.  We walked down to the Central Plaza Ratcada-Rama III mall for a walk around and a bite of food.  I was feeling adventurous and tried the very tasty spicy minced catfish salad while Meghan, Eric, and the kids had fruit smoothies.

Day 2 - Friday, 28 December 2012
We boarded the Chao Phraya Express River Taxi boats for a trip up river.  We stopped at Chinatown in search of durian and other exotic tastes.  We found what we were looking for.  The durian smells as advertised, of dirty socks, but isn't as tasty as we were led to believe.  Still, the deep fried coconut and banana balls from the street vendor didn't disappoint.  Also mixed in was some bird's nest and (gasp!) shark fin soup.

We've figured out the bus and SkyTrain system and are getting around with ease for a few dollars a day.  For instance, it costs us 10 baht (per person) to take the bus up to the BTS station where we caught the SkyTrain to the Central Pier for another 20 baht.

Day 3 - Saturday, 29 December 2012
Lured by the promise of finding everything under the sun, we got up early, had breakfast and were on the road by 9:00 am in an effort to beat the crowds flocking to the much heralded Chatuchak Weekend Market, a market renowned as one of the largest in the world.  Here's a market map:

The market was packed with tourists and locals all keen on finding a deal on a knock-off purse or cheap flip flops.  With our Nancy Chandler Map of Bangkok in hand, we navigated the packed market with relative ease.  It was very hot, mind you, and after about 5 hours of shopping we'd had enough.  Buoyed by coconut ice cream, chocolate covered bananas with sprinkles, fruit smoothies, and other treats, Lockie and Maeve were in good form.  While Maeve found a great sun hat and some sandals, Lockie was thwarted in his search for Pokemon cards.  We'll keep looking.
